Frequently Asked Questions
Artificial Grass Questions
How much does it cost to have artificial grass installed?
Angi's 2026 data shows a typical project at $3,244 to $8,711, and published per-square-foot ranges run from about $5 to $25 installed depending on the product and the prep. A 500-square-foot backyard often lands in the mid four figures. We give a written price after measuring.
Does artificial grass get too hot in Bakersfield?
In direct afternoon sun it gets much hotter than live grass; one study measured turf up to 69 degrees hotter than irrigated grass. Shade, lighter turf colors, cooling infills and a quick hose rinse help. We point out the spots in your yard where heat will matter most.
Can my HOA stop me from installing artificial grass?
Not outright. California Civil Code Section 4735 voids HOA rules that prohibit artificial turf. Your HOA can still review color, product and layout, so we supply specs and a sketch for the application.
Is installing artificial turf tax deductible?
For a personal home, landscaping is generally not deductible. Water-provider rebates may be available instead. If the turf is on a rental or business property, ask your tax preparer how it should be treated.
How long does artificial grass last?
HomeGuide puts quality artificial grass at 15 to 25 years with proper care. Strong sun, heavy dog use and skipped brushing shorten that. UV-stabilized blades and a solid base help it last.
What maintenance does artificial grass need?
Blow off leaves, rinse pet areas, cross-brush high-traffic spots a few times a year, and top up infill when it thins. There is no mowing, fertilizing or summer watering schedule to keep.
How long does installation take?
Most residential yards take one to three days once materials are on site. Larger lawns, hand-dug side yards and putting greens with contours take longer. We give you a schedule with the written quote.
Artificial Grass Installation Questions
How deep do you dig for artificial grass?
Usually three to four inches, enough to remove the root zone and make room for a compacted crushed-rock base. Low spots or soft soil can need more. We set the depth after looking at the yard.
Can you install artificial grass over existing grass?
We do not recommend it. Dead grass and roots break down and settle, leaving dips and soft spots under the turf. Removing the lawn and building a proper base is what keeps it flat.
What happens to my sprinklers?
Heads inside the turf area are capped. If the same zone waters trees or beds at the edge, we convert those to drip so they keep getting water.
Will the seams show?
On a properly seamed lawn they are hard to spot from a few feet away. We match the grain direction, glue on seaming tape and brush the blades over the joint.
Pet Turf & Dog Runs Questions
Does pet turf smell in the summer?
It can if urine cannot drain or never gets rinsed. A permeable backing, porous base and odor-control infill cut it down a lot. Regular rinsing and an enzyme cleaner handle the rest.
Is artificial grass too hot for dogs in Bakersfield?
In full afternoon sun it can be. Turf gets much hotter than grass, so shaded runs work best. Hose the area down before letting dogs out on hot afternoons and keep water and shade nearby.
Can dogs dig through artificial turf?
It is much harder than digging through dirt or grass. Turf on a compacted rock base with fastened edges gives them little to grab. Determined diggers sometimes work at an edge, so we fasten fence lines closely.
What infill is best for dogs?
Zeolite and pet-specific coated sands are the most common choices because they help hold ammonia odor between rinses. We go over the options and upkeep at the estimate.
Backyard Putting Greens Questions
How big should a backyard putting green be?
Many backyard greens fall between 200 and 600 square feet. That fits three or four cups with putts of different lengths. We size it to your yard and how you practice.
Can a synthetic putting green have breaks?
Yes. Contours are shaped into the base before the turf goes down, so you can practice left-to-right and right-to-left putts.
How do I keep my putting green fast?
Brush it regularly, keep it clear of leaves and top up sand infill as needed. We show you the brushing routine that holds the speed you chose.
Can I chip onto a synthetic green?
Yes. A fringe of longer turf around the green takes chip shots, and a firm green surface holds a pitched ball better than a soft lawn.
Pool & Patio Turf Questions
Is artificial grass good around a pool?
Yes, if it drains. Turf around a pool stays green despite splash-out and chlorine, and it is softer than concrete. We grade it so water runs away from the pool and pick an infill that will not wash in.
Can you put turf over a concrete patio?
Yes, over a foam pad, as long as the slab is sound and sloped or drilled so water can drain. Cracked, heaving slabs should be repaired or removed first.
Does turf around a pool get hot?
In direct sun, yes. It is best under shade or on the cooler side of the pool. Lighter turf colors and a quick rinse help on hot afternoons.
Will chlorine damage artificial grass?
Normal splash-out from a balanced pool does not harm good synthetic turf. Rinse the area occasionally to clear salt or chemical buildup.
Commercial & HOA Turf Questions
Does AB 1572 require HOAs to install turf?
No. It bans irrigating nonfunctional turf with drinking water. Owners can replace that grass with drought-tolerant plants, mulch, hardscape or synthetic turf. We help with the turf option.
What counts as nonfunctional turf?
The State Water Board describes it as mowed grass that is not used for recreation or community events, such as grass along streets, in parking lots, behind fences, or bordering signs, buildings and sidewalks.
Can you work while our property stays open?
Yes. We phase the work area by area, keep walkways open and schedule the loudest work for acceptable hours.
Do you provide paperwork for board approval?
Yes. We supply product data sheets, the manufacturer warranty terms, a site sketch and an itemized written bid.
Turf Repair & Replacement Questions
Can you repair turf someone else installed?
Yes. Most of our repair work is on lawns installed by others. We match the turf as closely as we can for patches and fix the base problems underneath.
Why are my turf seams coming apart?
Usually the seam was not glued and nailed properly, or the turf expands and contracts with heat more than the seam can handle. We re-glue on fresh seaming tape and secure it.
How do I get rid of dog urine smell in my turf?
Rinse often and use an enzyme cleaner first. If the smell stays, the base is usually holding urine. Replacing the infill and base under the pet area fixes it for good.
What are the melted streaks on my artificial grass?
Often sunlight reflected from a window, especially energy-efficient glass. We repair the damaged area and suggest a screen, shade or planting to break up the reflection.
