Turf for the Hottest Lawns in the Valley
We install artificial grass in Bakersfield every month of the year, from small backyards in older east-side neighborhoods to full front and back lawns in the newer northwest and southwest subdivisions. The reason people call is almost always the same: a natural lawn here needs a lot of water for a long hot season, and it still turns brown by August.
What the climate asks of a lawn
Bakersfield has a hot desert climate. The city averages about 6.4 inches of rain a year, nearly all of it between late fall and spring, and 112 days at or above 90 degrees. The 100-degree stretch usually runs from early June to mid September, about 36 days a year on average. Grass has to be watered through all of it. Synthetic turf does not, which is the single biggest reason homeowners here switch.
The heat island in the middle of town
Neighborhoods near downtown and along the Highway 99 corridor can run up to 7 degrees warmer at night than the edges of town, according to the city's climate record. Warmer nights mean turf, concrete and block walls do not cool off as much before the next day. In those older central neighborhoods we lean toward lighter turf colors, cooling infills and shaded placement for areas where kids and pets play.
Water days in the city
The City of Bakersfield put its own domestic water customers on Stage 2 rules in December 2021: odd addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, even addresses Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, never on Monday, and only from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. Those rules were still in force in 2023 while Cal Water, which serves other parts of town, moved to a looser stage. Check which provider is on your bill. A turf lawn removes the zone that uses the most of those watering windows.
Soil from the Kern River
The city grew on the alluvial plain of the Kern River. Some valley-floor soils, including the USDA's Bakersfield series, are deep fine sandy loams over layered sand and silt that drain slowly. Others are sandy and drain fast. We dig a test area at the estimate and set base depth and grade to match what is actually in your yard, so winter storms and hose rinses drain away instead of puddling under the turf.

- Triple-digit summers. Bakersfield averages 36 days a year at or above 100 degrees, roughly June 2 to September 19, and 112 days at or above 90 degrees. The record is 118 degrees, set July 28, 1908.
- Very little rain. The city averages about 6.36 inches of rain a year, mostly in winter, and has a hot desert (BWh) climate. Frost and dense tule fog are common from November through March.
- City watering days. City of Bakersfield water customers have been on Stage 2 rules since December 14, 2021: three assigned days a week by address, no Monday watering, and watering only from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m.
- Valley-floor soils. The USDA Bakersfield soil series is very deep fine sandy loam over stratified sand and silt, somewhat poorly drained with slow permeability, found on floodplains in the southern San Joaquin Valley.

Bakersfield Questions
What days can I water my lawn in Bakersfield?
For City of Bakersfield water customers, odd addresses water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and even addresses Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., with no watering Mondays. Cal Water customers follow different rules, so check your bill.
Does the city allow artificial grass in front yards?
California Government Code Section 53087.7 bars cities and counties from prohibiting synthetic grass on residential property. Local rules can still set reasonable limits on type, and HOAs can review the design.
How hot does turf get in a Bakersfield summer?
Much hotter than grass in direct sun. A UNLV study recorded turf surfaces up to 169 degrees. Shade and lighter products help, and a quick rinse cools it for a while.
Is there a rebate for removing my lawn?
Cal Water has offered up to $3 per square foot for qualifying residential turf removal of 250 to 1,500 square feet. Programs change, so check with your water provider before work starts.
Which part of Bakersfield gets the hottest turf?
Neighborhoods near downtown and the Highway 99 corridor can stay up to 7 degrees warmer at night than the edges of town. Any yard in full western sun gets hot turf in the afternoon. We plan placement and product around your yard’s sun, not the zip code.
